During childhood, there are several different types of illnesses that can be life threatening for young children. Although most adults may be able to fight off these illnesses, infants and young children may not have a strong enough immune system to fend off these bacterial and viral illnesses. It is also interesting to note that many of these illnesses are not only surprisingly common, but many also have easy treatments available for prevention.
The flu virus is one childhood illness that is easily passed between children and their families during the flu season. Every year, children die from complications from the flu such as respiratory distress and secondary infections such as pneumonia. Children can also become ill with measles and chickenpox. These illnesses can often lead to high fevers and other symptoms that can quickly become life threatening. RSV is another common childhood illness that often strikes children below preschool-age. This illness causes intense coughing and respiratory symptoms that can lead to hospitalization. Even a simple illness, such as the stomach flu, can become life threatening if a child becomes dehydrated. Fortunately, many of the most common childhood illnesses can be prevented through vaccines or appropriate hygiene methods such as handwashing and throwing away tissues. To prevent life threatening complications from common illnesses, the best method is always prevention.
